Brow/Forehead Lift

Sagging forehead skin and hooded upper eyelids can contribute to an aging appearance and even create an unintentionally sad, angry or tired facial expression. A forehead lift can address skin that has sagged over the eyes and begun to obstruct vision, as well as deep forehead wrinkles. A forehead lift targets wrinkles and loose skin above the eyebrows to restore a youthful appearance. Forehead lifts can be paired with facelifts or eyelid rejuvenation surgery (blepharoplasty) to improve the youthful appearance of the face and even improve peripheral vision.

Candidates for a Forehead Lift

The best candidates for a forehead lift are those who are experiencing sagging forehead skin and hooding of the upper eyelids. Candidates should have realistic expectations of what plastic surgery can do for them and be prepared to take time off from work and daily activities to allow the body time to heal. A one-on-one consultation with a board-certified facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Daines will determine if patients are good candidates for a forehead lift or if their concerns would be better addressed through other options.

The Procedure

Forehead lifts can be completed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The procedure lasts about one to two hours and is performed as an outpatient procedure so patients can return home the same day. Forehead lifts utilize a range of incisions and techniques for results that are customized to each patient’s needs and concerns.

The current preferred modern brow lift technique is the endoscopic brow lift, utilizing a thin tube called an endoscope that has a camera attached on the end. This modern technique allows for smaller incisions that yield satisfying results with less pain, bruising and downtime. The endoscope allows the surgeon to view the underlying muscles and tissues of the forehead through incisions less than an inch of length placed inconspicuously within the hairline. The surgeon can then lift and reposition the tissue to achieve a more youthful appearance. With the endoscopic method, recovery is quicker and scars are easily hidden.

During an initial consultation, Dr. Daines will discuss each option available to his patients and formulate a suitable plan that will address the intricacies and individual concerns of each patient for tailor-made results.

Results and Recovery

Recovery from a forehead lift lasts about 7-10 days. Exercise and more strenuous activities can gradually be resumed after the first three to four weeks while patients are generally able to return to work seven to 10 days after the procedure. Any sutures or stitches will be removed one week following the surgery.

Side effects from a forehead lift include swelling, bruising and temporary numbness. Makeup can be used to cover up any noticeable bruising. Most side effects will improve over the course of the first one to two weeks. Although results are immediately noticeable, while the final results develop over the course of 4-6 weeks as swelling subsides and the incision lines continue to heal and fade.

Procedure Details

A brow lift is performed in an outpatient surgery center under general or twilight anesthesia. The procedure takes between 1-2 hours. Three small incisions are made in the hairline above the forehead and two additional incisions are made in the hair above the temples. No hair is shaved and visible post-operative scarring is minimal. With special instruments, the forehead and brow are then released and raised to a more ideal position. The incisions are closed with surgical clips or stitches, which are removed about a week after the procedure.

Following surgery, discomfort is mild and can be controlled with pain medication as needed. There will be bruising and swelling for 7-14 days that can be minimized by using ice packs and sleeping with the head of the bed elevated. Some numbness is common, but temporary. Showering is allowed after 48 hours and sutures or surgical clips are removed within a week. Scars will fade to barely visible lines. Most patients can return to work after the first week and should avoid strenuous activity for 3-4 weeks.
