Chin Implant

What is a Chin Implant?

Placement of a chin implant, also known as chin augmentation, is an extremely effective solution for providing definition to the lower face and balancing the facial profile. Chin implants are made of various biocompatible materials including silicone, gortex, and medpor and are custom-shaped for a natural looking fit. The results are permanent but can be reversed if desired.

Chin implants are used to correct a weak chin or to balance a strong nose. Patients who undergo chin augmentation typically have a very high satisfaction rate, due to the positive changes this surgery can offer. In fact, many aesthetic surgeons believe a chin implant is the facial cosmetic procedure with the most “bang for your buck” when comparing aesthetic impact with the cost of a cosmetic procedure.

Choosing a Surgeon for Your Chin Implant

When choosing a surgeon for your chin implant, you want to find a physician that is highly skilled in the procedure and experienced in all types of facial enhancements. This is because the chin is just one feature that affects the overall balance and proportion of the facial profile. An experienced surgeon will be able to discern whether a chin augmentation alone will deliver desired results or whether another procedure may be required to bring the face into perfect balance. Dr. Daines is board-certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and can help you understand the benefits of chin augmentation and additional procedures if they should be necessary.

Chin augmentation is frequently combined with other facial procedures for a synergistic effect as well. Liposuction of the neck is easily performed at the same time as chin augmentation to add a crisp, youthful transition from the jawline to the neck. Rhinoplasty and chin augmentation are complementary procedures that are frequently performed simultaneously. Done together, they can balance the profile and deliver a more natural long-term result.

Chin augmentation is an effective way to bring balance and proportion to your facial profile. To find out if chin augmentation would help you reach your aesthetic goals, schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Daines by phoning 949-397-6499.

Procedure Details

Chin augmentation surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center under twilight or general anesthesia and takes about an hour. A small incision is made inside the mouth or under the chin, where visible post-operative scarring will be minimal. The implant is then customized to the shape of the patient’s jaw and secured in place. The incision is closed with tiny stitches.

After surgery, there is bruising and swelling for around 7-14 days as the surgical area heals. Discomfort is very mild and can be controlled with pain medication as needed. Swelling and bruising can be minimized by using ice packs and sleeping with the head of the bed elevated for the first 48 hours. The stitches will be removed after 5-7 days. Most patients can return to work after the first week and should avoid strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks.
