Face and Neck Lift

What is a Facelift?
Many factors contribute to the appearance of an aging face. As time passes, the inherent elasticity of our skin is diminished. Below the skin, the muscle and fat lose their intrinsic support, relax, and descend. Compounding the problem, volume is lost in a complex pattern affecting the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and even the bone. These processes, along with the influence of heredity and sun damage, lead to soft tissue laxity in the face and neck. The end result is the formation of jowls, deep folds in our cheeks, and redundancy in our necks and under our chins.

A facelift or rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure performed to lift facial soft tissues that have dropped from their youthful position. Contrary to popular belief, a facelift repositions and tightens the muscle beneath the skin, not the skin itself. A properly performed facelift, often in conjunction with volume restoration, restores a vibrant, rejuvenated appearance and takes years off your face. A facelift is frequently combined with a neck lift, which removes loose skin and sagging tissue from the neck while reducing the appearance of jowls and a double chin. When the two procedures are performed simultaneously, the end result is both dramatic and long-lasting.

Dr. Daines is a facelift specialist in Newport Beach who performs several variations of the conventional facelift, offering targeted solutions to match each patient’s unique needs and anatomy. For example, jowling can be effectively addressed with a “mini-facelift” designed to improve the jowls and restore definition to the jawline. Patients with more significant laxity of the lower face and neck are excellent candidates for a “lower face and neck lift” which targets the jowls, jawline, and excess tissue in the neck. Finally, when additional attention to the area under the chin is indicated, Dr. Daines includes a submentoplasty to remove excess fat and tighten the muscles in the front of the neck.

Dr. Daines is a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is highly qualified to perform your facelift procedure. He has the surgical techniques at his disposal to give you a customized, natural, and lasting facelift result. Dr. Daines works closely with each of his patients to identify their specific concerns and create a
treatment plan that will target those concerns and provide the best possible outcome.

A facelift can be performed alone or in conjunction with other restorative procedures. Common options that combine well with a facelift include a brow lift, eyelid surgery and a neck lift. Fat transfer for volume restoration and skin rejuvenation procedures such as laser resurfacing can be performed at the same time or after the facelift to further enhance your results.

Procedure Details

A facelift is usually performed in an outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia although twilight anesthesia can also be used. Discreet, hidden incisions are made in the hairline at the temples and extended into the natural creases in front of and behind the ears. The underlying muscles are lifted and tightened and the skin is then re-draped over the repositioned tissues. When a neck lift is also performed, a small camouflaged incision is made under the chin and liposuction may be added to remove deposits of excess fat from the neck area.

Advancements in facelift techniques have made for a much quicker and more comfortable facelift recovery. Discomfort is mild and can be easily controlled with medication if needed. Numbness is also common after a facelift and will subside over time. Dressings are removed after 1-2 days and sutures are removed after seven days. At that time, patients can begin to wear makeup and may resume some of their regular activities. Light exercise is allowed after 2 weeks, and the hidden scars will fade to barely visible lines over the next few months.

A facelift continues to be the top surgical choice for addressing advanced signs of aging in the mid and lower face and neck. If you would like to learn more about this procedure, contact Daines Plastic Surgery at 949-397-6499.
