What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that add volume beneath the skin or stimulate the body’s own collagen production. They are an excellent choice for patients who want to address signs of aging without surgery or to complement the results of procedures such as a facelift or eyelid surgery.
Types of Dermal Fillers
The 2 types of dermal fillers we use are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and biostimulators. HA fillers produce immediate results that hydrate and plump treatment areas, while biostimulators gradually restore youthful structure by stimulating collagen production.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains moisture. In injectable filler form, HA-based gels restore youthful-looking volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial features with results that are immediately visible.
We offer several leading HA filler options:
- JUVÉDERM: The JUVÉDERM product line includes VOLUMA®, VOLBELLA®, VOLLURE®, and other options designed to treat specific concerns.
- Restylane: This versatile family of fillers includes Silk® and Lyft®. They are ideal for softening wrinkles, contouring the face, and rejuvenating delicate areas such as under the eyes.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible, making them a safe and flexible option for patients seeking natural-looking results with minimal downtime.
Biostimulators
Unlike HA fillers, biostimulators don’t simply add volume. Instead, they encourage your skin to produce more collagen, leading to gradual, longer-lasting rejuvenation. Results appear over several weeks and can last up to 2 years or more.
Our biostimulatory options include:
- Radiesse®: A calcium hydroxylapatite filler, Radiesse restores structure and stimulates collagen in areas such as the cheeks, jawline, and hands.
- Sculptra®: A poly-L-lactic acid filler, Sculptra works gradually to replace lost collagen and improve skin thickness and elasticity.
Biostimulators are especially beneficial for patients experiencing more diffuse volume loss or skin laxity and can complement HA fillers for comprehensive results.
What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Fillers can target a range of age-related cosmetic concerns in a way that looks authentic:
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Marionette lines around the mouth
- Thin or deflated lips
- Hollow cheeks or temples
- Under-eye hollows
- Weak chin or jawline definition
- Early signs of skin laxity

Lip Fillers
One of the most popular applications of HA fillers is lip enhancement. Subtle, carefully placed lip fillers can add natural-looking volume and smooth vertical lip lines. They can also refine the Cupid’s bow, enhance the border of the lips for improved definition, and even improve lip color and texture, depending on the product used.

Facial Contouring With Fillers
Beyond smoothing wrinkles, dermal fillers are an excellent tool for nonsurgical facial contouring. By strategically adding volume to key areas, fillers can:
- Sharpen the jawline
- Create a more defined chin
- Restore youthful cheek projection
- Balance facial proportions
This approach is especially appealing to patients who want to enhance their features without implants or surgery. Results are immediate and can last from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product used.
Dermal Fillers vs. BOTOX®: What’s the Difference?
While both dermal fillers and BOTOX are injectable treatments, they work differently.
- BOTOX targets dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial muscle movement, such as frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. It temporarily relaxes the underlying muscles to smooth existing lines and prevent the formation of new ones.
- Fillers, on the other hand, restore lost volume and create structure. They can plump lips, soften folds, lift cheeks, and even refine the jawline. Unlike BOTOX, fillers do not affect muscle activity.
Because they address different concerns, fillers and BOTOX are often used together for more extensive facial rejuvenation. For example, fillers can lift and contour, while BOTOX smooths expression lines, helping you look refreshed from every angle.
