What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” improves the nose’s shape, size, and symmetry. This highly customizable surgery can address a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Nasal asymmetry
  • Bumps or humps on the bridge
  • A wide or flat nasal bridge
  • Enlarged or wide nostrils
  • A hooked, drooping, or bulbous tip
  • Prior trauma or injury

Dr. Daines tailors every rhinoplasty to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals. He offers both open and closed rhinoplasty and will help you decide which technique suits your needs.

While rhinoplasty is often performed for cosmetic reasons, it can also be combined with septoplasty to correct a deviated septum and improve breathing.

Are You a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:

  • You have cosmetic concerns about your nose
  • You’re in overall good health and can undergo surgery
  • You have realistic expectations about your results
  • You can take time to recover from the procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Daines will examine your anatomy and discuss whether rhinoplasty, septoplasty, or revision rhinoplasty is appropriate based on your goals and surgical history.

Your Rhinoplasty Options

Dr. Daines will discuss the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty before your procedure, ensuring you know exactly what to expect on the day of your surgery. Open rhinoplasty is typically the optimal choice for patients requiring moderate to substantial refinements. The best approach is always the one that achieves safe, natural-looking results for your unique anatomy.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils). This approach allows Dr. Daines complete visibility of the underlying nasal structure, making it the preferred method for more complex or transformative changes. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 2 to 4 hours.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty, also called endonasal rhinoplasty, uses internal incisions within the nostrils to eliminate visible scarring. This technique best suits patients requiring minor adjustments and generally offers a shorter recovery time.

Alarplasty

Alarplasty (nostril reduction) focuses solely on narrowing or reshaping the nostrils. This can be performed alone or in combination with rhinoplasty. Incisions are placed in the natural creases for discreet healing.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Even though each patient’s recovery is unique, open rhinoplasty tends to require a longer recovery than closed rhinoplasty. You should plan to take at least a week off from work and other everyday activities. Most patients feel comfortable leaving home and going out in public after 7 to 10 days, although it takes 2 weeks or more to heal fully.

After surgery, an external nasal splint is placed to protect and support the new shape. Most patients return to nonstrenuous activities within 7 to 10 days. Mild bruising, swelling, and congestion are common and begin to subside after the first week. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity and contact sports for several weeks. Dr. Daines will provide personalized instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Rhinoplasty Results

Even though you’ll see some changes in your nose’s appearance within 2 to 3 weeks, final results may take up to 12 months as residual swelling gradually resolves. Any external incisions will heal in a matter of weeks. Once the incisions have closed, your scar will begin maturing.

Surgery incisions can take 12 to 18 months to mature completely and will gradually fade to a thin line that appears unnoticeable. Rest assured, Dr. Daines will take every step possible to minimize scarring and ensure your results match your expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there risks associated with rhinoplasty?
All surgical procedures include some risk. Most side effects are temporary and include swelling, bruising, bleeding, and congestion. Less commonly, patients may experience infection, numbness, or dissatisfaction with cosmetic results. Dr. Daines minimizes risk through meticulous technique and thorough preoperative planning.
Can rhinoplasty improve breathing?
Yes. If nasal obstruction or a deviated septum impacts your breathing, Dr. Daines may recommend combining rhinoplasty with septoplasty for aesthetic and functional improvement.
Is there a nonsurgical rhinoplasty option?
For select patients, nonsurgical rhinoplasty—sometimes called a “liquid nose job”—temporarily improves the shape of the nose using dermal fillers. While not a replacement for surgery, it can be ideal for subtle changes. Results typically last 6 to 12 months.
How can I reduce swelling after rhinoplasty?
To minimize swelling, keep your head elevated (even during sleep), use cold compresses during the first few days, and avoid strenuous activity until cleared. Swelling peaks within the first week and gradually subsides over several months.
What procedures complement rhinoplasty?
Chin augmentation is commonly paired with rhinoplasty to improve facial balance. Other complementary procedures may include neck liposuction or blepharoplasty. Dr. Daines will discuss your options during your consultation.
