Skin Cancer
About Skin Cancer
Skin cancer commonly develops on sun-exposed parts of the body such as the face and scalp. Depending on the type of skin cancer, its appearance may resemble a non-healing sore, a crusted or scaly patch, a pearly bump, or an irregular dark spot. Any new lesion that appears or long-standing lesion that changes should be evaluated and potentially biopsied to determine if it is a skin cancer.
Many options are available to treat skin cancer today, depending on the cancer’s type, size, depth and location. For skin cancers on the face and neck, surgical removal is frequently performed by a dermatologist with special training in a technique known as Mohs surgery. Mohs surgery removes cancerous tissue and evaluates it under a microscope to ensure that all of its roots and extensions have been eliminated. Mohs surgery is particularly useful for recurrent or aggressive cancers and for those in sensitive anatomic areas like the nose, lips, or ears where maximum preservation of tissue is important for maintaining normal appearance and function.
