Skin Resurfacing

What is Skin Resurfacing?
Over the years, the sun and other environmental factors damage the skin, leading to acceleration of the aging process. This can result in brown spots and abnormal pigmentation, in addition to fine lines, deep wrinkles, and other visible irregularities.

Skin resurfacing is an excellent option for restoring softer, smoother skin. Peels, lasers, and dermabrasion all remove the damaged outer layers of skin as well as the brown spots and uneven pigmentation. As the skin heals, new collagen is formed that improves wrinkles and leads to a tighter, healthier, more youthful complexion. Once healing is complete, the final result can be quite dramatic.

Choosing a Surgeon for Your Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Dr. Daines utilizes skin resurfacing as a powerful tool for improving the health and appearance of your skin.

Resurfacing can be done alone or as a component of a more comprehensive plan that includes other surgical or non-surgical procedures. During your consultation, he will evaluate your skin and help you decide whether resurfacing can help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

If you have a history of cold sores, you may be given an oral anti-viral medication to take after surgery to prevent an outbreak. Protecting your skin from the sun after your skin resurfacing procedure is extremely important to prevent abnormal pigmentation and to maintain long-term results. Dr. Daines will also talk to you about a daily skin care regimen to enhance your final outcome and achieve long term skin health.

Skin resurfacing is a highly effective way to turn back the clock on your skin and create a healthy, vibrant glow to your complexion. To learn more about your options in skin resurfacing, contact Daines Plastic Surgery at 949-397-6499.

Procedure Details

Skin resurfacing can be done with topical, twilight, or general anesthesia depending upon individual needs and circumstances. The specifics of the procedure will vary depending on whether your resurfacing treatment is done with a laser, peel, or dermabrasion. Most procedures are completed within an hour or two and patients typically return home the same day as their treatment. Depending on the technique, a special device or chemical formulation is applied to the skin’s surface, which effectively removes outer skin layers to a prescribed depth based on the specific concerns to be treated.

After the procedure, ointment and/or a light dressing will be applied. You will be given specific instructions for cleaning and caring for your skin during the healing procedure, which generally occurs over 7-10 days. During the recovery period, you will experience redness, swelling, and peeling as outer skin cells flake away and fresh new skin takes its place. Although the skin can remain a light shade of pink for several weeks, you may begin wearing makeup to camouflage the redness once the skin has healed.
